Job Posting: Sr Environmental Management Specialist, Port of Seattle

PURPOSE:
This position will implement, administer and promote building and facility energy efficiency and sustainability projects and programs for the Maritime Environment and Sustainability Department in coordination of with facility managers.   Work products will focus on energy conservation strategies, greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction, energy accounting, and renewable energy deployment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
This list is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY, and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and duties performed.  Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:Continuously improve energy efficiency and sustainability: Identify and implement energy conservation strategies and measures, optimize building and facility energy operations and maintenance procedures; identify and incorporate energy conservation and GHG reduction measures into building retrofits and new construction, and recommend innovative energy reduction opportunities.

Energy Efficiency Program   Incorporate energy efficiency strategies into a comprehensive, transparent and measurable building and facility energy efficiency and greenhouse gas reduction program  in coordination of with facility managers and construction teams.
Data management: Analyze and report on effectiveness of projects. Oversee accurate and complete databases and records. Gather and analyze key metrics to inform energy efficiency investments including GHG emissions accounting, electricity use, cost savings, and development costs; identify and fill data gaps to guide future actions.

Reporting: Evaluate and demonstrate effectiveness of energy and sustainability program activities and recommend program modifications; monitor conformance with energy and sustainability program/project budget and other requirements; prepare narrative and statistical program performance reports and recommendations.

Communications: Write, review, and present a variety of energy and sustainability communication documents ranging from technical reports, memos, public and internal communications, and correspondence with internal and external stakeholders. Knowledge of behavior change strategies to encourage more energy efficient behaviors among employees and tenants.
Grant funding: Identify, capture, and manage external funding opportunities to advance the Port’s energy and climate goals.

Teamwork: Work collaboratively with diverse groups of internal and external stakeholders needed to deploy conservation strategies; lead meetings and leverage different perspectives to achieve consensus. Support or lead procurement efforts, direct or support the work of consultants.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:Knowledge of building and facility operations and technologies, electrical, lighting and mechanical systems, and emerging policies, technologies, and trends.
Knowledge of principles, theories, methods, and techniques necessary to implement, manage, lead or support energy efficiency and environmental sustainability projects and programs in a large, complex organization like a Port
Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, regulations, relevant codes, and court decisions applicable to energy and sustainability.
Analytical and basic math skills; computer skills, particularly data management and spreadsheet use; research skills, measurement skills, and technical reading skills.
Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced team environment and understand, interpret and explain energy and sustainability principles, data, and strategies to diverse audiences.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of managers and staff, representatives of other agencies, consultants, contractors, tenants, the public and others encountered in the energy and sustainability course of work.
Ability to prepare clear, concise and comprehensive reports, correspondence and other energy and sustainability documents appropriate to the audience.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Combination of education and experience demonstrating knowledge, skills and abilities equivalent to:Bachelor’s degree with a major in Environmental Science, Management, Engineering, Math or a related field; and
Three (3) years’ of experience managing, maintaining or evaluating building systems.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:Master’s degree in Energy Management, Meteorology or Climate Science;
Five (5) years progressively responsible experience in environmental policy, plan building systems, energy efficiency improvement and environmental program management;
ASHRAE Building Energy Assessment certification; and/or
Certified Energy Manager
