EnviroMedia Social Marketing

In the combination of what it does and how it does it, EnviroMedia Social Marketing stands alone among advertising and public relations agencies in theUnited States. They have offices in Portland, Oregon and Austin, Texas.

Founded in 1997, EnviroMedia Social Marketing has grown into a full-service advertising and public relations agency working in virtually all major areas of the environment and public health: flu education and prevention; preventing childhood obesity and chronic disease, including cancer, HIV and diabetes; clean energy, water and energy conservation; and other social goods such as voting rights, emergency preparedness and education.

For more than a decade, EnviroMedia has been entrusted with the world-famous “Don’t Mess with Texas” litter prevention campaign. In the spring of 2009, when Texas faced the real threat of a flu pandemic, the Texas Department of State Health Services turned to EnviroMedia to quickly develop a groundbreaking H1N1 flu prevention education campaign, which launched approximately three weeks after a scope of work had been signed.

With a mix of government, corporate and nonprofit clients, EnviroMedia has grown rapidly, even during the worst economy in 75 years. During the 2009 recession, EnviroMedia saw a 47 percent increase in staff, opened a West Coast office in Portland and surpassed $100 million in historical gross revenue. This is a testament to the fact that the world can’t wait around for the kind of work that EnviroMedia does; the more dire social problems become, the more urgent social marketing becomes. And then there’s the quality and effectiveness: In EnviroMedia’s annual client survey, 100 percent said they would recommend the agency to others.

EnviroMedia’s services begin with research, which points the way to strategy including branding and message. This strategy drives the award-winning creative process, which in turn feeds three major avenues of execution:

·    Multicultural advertising, including TV, video, radio, print, billboard, web and interactive, and media planning and buying

·    Public Relations, including media relations, social media, crisis communication, press conferences, editorial board meetings and stakeholder engagement

·    Experiential Marketing, including special events, school outreach, minority outreach, educational demonstrations and partnership development

EnviroMedia’s subsidiary, Green Canary Sustainability Consulting (www.greencanary.net), consults with client companies and governments who want to develop strategies and positioning for their environmental programs.

In limiting its work to the environment, public health and select social causes, and in the unusual suite of services it offers, EnviroMedia has few true peers on the national scene. But perhaps its most distinctive feature is the way it steps out on its own to advocate for causes it sees as critical. To that end, EnviroMedia, along with University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication, co-founded the nationally acclaimed Greenwashing Index (www.GreenWashingIndex.com), an online user-driven forum where advertising is rated for its “green” honesty.

More recently, the agency launched the blog GreenDetectives.net to look more closely at the real solutions to climate change. Co-founders Kevin Tuerff and Valerie Davis spend several weeks of every year attending U.N. Climate Change Conferences, most recently as delegates of the U.S. Sustainable Business Council, and learning as much as possible for the agency and its clients about climate change policy.

In 2011, EnviroMedia was named an Environmental Protection Agency Green Power Partner for its significant purchase of renewable energy credits (RECs) to offset its carbon emissions from day-to-day business activity.
